Running water

In July this year, Steve Morgan completed the London Marathon in aid of WaterAid and his final donation to the organisation was £89,000 – the largest sponsorship figure they had ever received.

Since then, the sites that Steve visited in Rwanda have been transformed as part of the Clean and Green environment campaign. Using communal rainwater harvesting systems, primary schools, communities and orphan villages have benefitted from the provision of hand washing facilities, latrines, and underground water tanks for the storage of harvested water. The funds have also provided training for 15 Environmental Health Officers on the establishment of community hygiene clubs.

Wolves boss inspired to run London Marathon for WaterAid

Wolverhampton Wanderers' Chairman and businessman Steve Morgan has been inspired to run the London Marathon for the international charity WaterAid, after seeing first-hand what life is like without access to clean water in Rwanda.

A keen supporter of the charity, Steve visited the Bugesera district of Rwanda in November last year. He has since pledged hundreds of thousands of pounds through his charitable trust, The Morgan Foundation, to fund WaterAid setting up its first sustainable water, sanitation and hygiene programme in the country.

In addition, Steve is now preparing to run the London Marathon in on 17 April 2011 to raise further awareness of Rwanda and funds for WaterAid/Morgan Foundation projects.
“What I saw in Rwanda has really hit home to me the importance of this programme and I’m pleased to confirm that The Morgan Foundation will give £465,000 over a three-year period to fund the provision of low cost sustainable water, sanitation and hygiene facilities,” he explains. “It has also inspired me to take part in the London Marathon in further support of WaterAid’s work.”

A small, landlocked country in East Africa, Rwanda has a population of nearly 10 million. Despite developments in recent years, 70% of Rwandans still live in absolute poverty and 1.6 million children die from diseases caused by a lack of clean water and sanitation every year.

“Many will remember the atrocities in Rwanda where nearly one million people were killed during three months of genocide in 1994,” says Steve. “Since then, Rwanda has moved on a long way and thanks to President Kagame and his government the country has made significant economic progress.

“However one big issue that remains is child mortality due to poor quality drinking water and lack of sanitation. As a result, diarrhoea is the biggest killer of children under the age of five in Africa.”

The entrepreneur and philanthropist visited communities in the Bugesera district where nearly all the water points were broken. He also spent the day with a local farmer, accompanying him on his daily six mile walk to collect water from a river, carrying back a 20 kg jerry can on an uphill climb, before helping the farmer cook with it.

Before leaving Rwanda, the Wolves Chairman had the opportunity to meet for a full ninety minutes with the President of the Republic of Rwanda, Paul Kagame. They discussed issues concerning the development of Rwanda as well as the possibility of a football exchange between Rwanda and Wolves. Steve also took the opportunity to present football kits to local schools and refereed a football match between two of the villages.

“One of the fun parts of the trip was taking some Wolves kits out to the local kids,” he explained. “We had a fantastic afternoon where we organised a match between two of the local villages. The guys were so proud wearing their Wolves kits for the first time; they’d never played in team strips before. It was a great game which I thoroughly enjoyed refereeing.”

With the Morgan Foundation’s financial support WaterAid is now working in partnership with local organisations to rehabilitate community water supply systems, constructing latrines and installing rainwater harvesting systems in the district.

WaterAid’s Rebecca Lloyd, who accompanied Steve on the visit, added: “We’re so grateful for the fantastic support of the Morgan Foundation, which will enable us to set up a new country programme in Rwanda, and help reach thousands of people without access to safe water and sanitation who desperately need help. We’re also thrilled that Steve is literally going the extra mile by taking part in the London Marathon. His dedicated support will undoubtedly benefit thousands of lives.”

- 884 million people in the world do not have access to safe water. This is roughly one in eight of the world's population.
